The Mayor’s Youth Employment and Education Program (MYEEP) leverages the desire of young people to be employed to engage them in job readiness training, youth development, and educational activities. In addition to work experience, the program provides support to youth as they transition towards successful adulthood by strengthening their understanding of the connection between employment and education as well as the responsibility of adults to contribute positively to society.

Mayor's Youth Employment and Education Program

2013 university day

Once again, MYEEP had a wonderful time at the University of California, Berkeley’s “Cal Day” open house! Over 100 of our participants joined in on the festivities including student organization tables, open lectures, dorm tours, and of course, the free giveaways. A special congratulations goes out to Group 7 and their Coordinator Chaperone, Tyree Johnson for winning this year’s Scavenger Hunt!

Until next year, thank you to all of our coordinators for chaperoning the youth and Berkeley’s Alpha Phi Omega for partnering with us!

Haley is currently a 9th grader at Lowell High School and is working as the Communications Intern for Central Office located at the Japanese Community Youth Council (JCYC). Keep reading below to hear Haley’s thoughts on MYEEP!

I love it here at JCYC. Everyone is so friendly, outgoing, and very funny. It’s not like the boring offices you see on television. Everyone in the office is close to one another by the pictures they have, the pranks, and they are always laughing. Sometimes we have rocket wars which are ridiculously fun!

In the beginning of workshops at JVS, everyone was shy, but the CITs and Diana would play icebreakers which loosen the mood up. They taught us about teamwork, presentation skills, banking, budgeting our money, and what is appropriate for work and what is not. The presentation skills MYEEP has taught me helped me a lot in life. For example, during class I’m not afraid to raise my hand like before. I used to be shy and intimidated. Also, because of my newly learned skills, I was more open to new people and made a lot of new friends at school.

MYEEP helps set the ground for your future. There are many great opportunities for scholarships, internships, and future (dream) jobs. You also get the job experience and a little bit of money just for you to spend, save for the future, help pay bills for your family, or just emergency cash.

A big thank you to all of our host sites, chaperones,...

eBay

Bi-Rite Market

KQED

San Francisco SPCA

A big thank you to all of our host sites, chaperones, volunteers, and youth who participated in our annual MYEEP in SF Career Day event last Friday!
In America, college graduation is usually a momentous occasion, an initial step towards achieving various life goals. Possibilities of a bright, new future stretched ahead for the newly matriculated. But with skyrocketing tuition and the growing number of students graduating every year, ask what college graduation today and the immediate response will likely be… debt.

Congratulations to all the MYEEP participants who successfully completed the training period of the program and are ready to start at their worksite placement in January! In order to pass the training period of the program, participants had to meet several requirements including active participation in training workshops, group projects, and creating and presenting an individual development plan which includes goal setting for personal habits, short term education benchmarks, career exploration, and college! Participants also had the opportunity to reflect on their favorite memory from childhood, people who have the most influence on them, who they want to make proud, and advice that they’d like to share with their peers!

Pictured above are several of the participants from Horizons Unlimited, our MYEEP location that serves the Mission and Potrero Hill neighborhoods.

"Study Tip for Finals Week: Don’t try to do all your studying the night before the test...."

“Study Tip for Finals Week: Don’t try to do all your studying the night before the test.
Since October, MYEEP Participants have been hard at work on personal development plans. As we get closer to presentation week, here are a few handy public speaking tips!

Check back next week for presentation highlights!

"The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the..."

“The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.”

-
Arthur C. Participants formed teams to evaluate and assess their neighborhoods, choose a business or non-profit to propose for their neighborhood and compete with other teams to be chosen as the winning proposal.

It was awesome to watch participants at Young Community Developers (YCD) present their Hatch Projects! Some unique ideas included a nonprofit dedicated to teaching motorcross (!!), retail stores that showcase local designers, and much more. Great job, YCD!

Sure, we all know about Firefighters, but did you know there are...

Sure, we all know about Firefighters, but did you know there are also Fire Lookouts? Here’s an awesome video showcasing a day in the life of a Fire Lookout.

This video serves as a pleasant reminder that there are an infinite number of job opportunities out there we may not even know existed.

decision making workshop

MYEEP Participants are practicing their decision making skills this week! Yesterday at the Chinatown MYEEP location, youth participated in a Cruise Ship Survival Challenge where they had to make decisions as a group to pass several risky obstacles like fighting off Donkey Kong and cooking food to survive. Then they learned how to use a Decision Making Guide to think through high school dilemmas. They focused on the following important questions to ask when making a tough decision:

What information do I need before I answer the question?

What are my choices? Is there an option that I haven’t considered? Is there a possible compromise?

What are the pros and cons of each choice?

What choice do you want to make and why?

Shoutout to Polar, Christina and Ivy, the CITs at Chinatown MYEEP, who did a great job yesterday!

agency spotlight: vietnamese youth development center

As you know, MYEEP is a collaboration between ten different non-profit agencies throughout San Francisco. We spoke with Stephanie Ha (MYEEP Coordinator @ Vietnamese Youth Development Center) to learn more about one of our agencies: VYDC!

What is the Vietnamese Youth Development Center’s mission?
Our mission is to provide direct assistance to Southeast Asian and neighborhood youth in the Tenderloin, by empowering them and their families to participate actively in the development of their community.

I know that VYDC offers more than 10 programs, can you tell me about them?
We offer comprehensive services such as youth employment (MYEEP!), case management, health and wellness, digital media/arts, and leadership programs. We help young people transition successfully into adulthood. Furthermore, we advocate for the needs of low-income youth in the neighborhood. We focus on developing youth leadership in the Tenderloin and throughout San Francisco.

In your opinion, what makes VYDC unique?
I think what makes VYDC unique is our diversity and commitment to the community. Although we are a very small organization, we serve over 1000 youth each year from different backgrounds and from different parts of the city. We continually strive to provide more services to bridge the gaps for our youth.

What do you hope for VYDC to achieve?
I hope for VYDC to not only continue the important work that we do, but to have the capacity to reach out and serve more youth in need. Additionally, I hope that the youth leaders that the Center has cultivated will wholeheartedly support the youth that come after them.

the myeep running team

Some of our MYEEP CITs, family, and friends are running in this Saturday’s San Francisco Aloha 5K! Please help support our team by making a donation HERE. All proceeds will support the youth programs at the Japanese Community Youth Council - which includes MYEEP!

first week of fall workshops

Our first week of fall workshops finished up last Friday and what a week it was! To kick off the School-Year Program, all participants learned about life responsibilities, teambuilding, and introductions to development plan building and financial literacy through the MY Path Savings Program with Mission SF. But of course, we wouldn’t be MYEEP if we didn’t incorporate some fun into the learning. Some of the week’s activities included redesigning a MUNI bus (no idea was deemed too crazy), the Rope Up teambuilding activity, and the Pass & Seek multitasking concentration game (all pictured above).

Hope all our participants had a great first week! We can’t wait to see more fun moments as the year continues.
